Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
