Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
